The Kīlauea Point Lighthouse, perched at the northernmost tip of Kauai in Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge at the finish of Kilauea Road, was first lit in 1913 as a navigational help for commercial shipping among Hawai‘i and the Orient. The 52-foot tower sits on in Kīlauea Point, a narrow, lava peninsula that was purchased from the Kīlauea Sugar Plantation Firm in 1909. In 1927, the Lighthouse played a important role in the initial trans-Pacific flight from the west coast of the United States to Honolulu by reorienting the two lost pilots of the Bird of Paradise, Lester J. Maitland and Albert Francis Hegenberger. The original second-order, bivalve Fresnel revolving lens was visible up to a distance of twenty-a single nautical miles.
