Claying is used to pick up all the contaminant in the paint, if you clay your car you will get a super smooth paint job when your done, Waxing is used to clean and protect the paint, Waxing won’t get all the fine particles out of the paint that claying will but it still cleans the surface. Buffing is used to get surface scratches and swirl marks off, but should only be done by a professional. I’ve never clayed my car. I just wax it and it looks good even after ten years.

Clay removes contaminants from the paint. Wax protects the paint. A buffer can be used for a variety of things, most people refer to “buffing” as the polishing step. If you don’t know how to use a buffer, I’d suggest staying away from it-you can really damage your paint with one. If you’d like to detail your car, follow these steps for a really nice final result: http://www.squidoo.com/showcardetailing
