you need to stick with CEA-compliant brands- which means that the amps have been tested and produce or exceed the advertised RMS wattage with minimum distortion and the subs can handle their advertised RMS wattage also
here are the top CEA-compliant brands
    Alpine (highly recommend)
    Bazooka (don’t like their subs)
    Blaupunkt (don’t like their subs)
    Clarion
    Eclipse
    Infinity (highly recommend)
    JBL
JL Audio (very good but over priced)
    JVC
    Kenwood (don’t like their subs)
Kicker (the best in my opinion)
    MTX (highly recommend)
    Pioneer
    Polk Audio (highly recommend)
    PPI
    Rockford Fosgate (highly recommend)
    Sony (don’t like their subs)

At my shop, for that kind of money, I would get you into Pioneer Premier (TSD502 AND TSD902) 5.25 Yellow cone Speakers and a Premier 6×9 for about 250 on both sets.
The premier Yellow gives you a good quaility sound for a very reasonable price. Its better then a conventional coax speaker but priced well below a component speaker set. the secret is a real soft dome tweeter in the coax mount (not 3 tin dots that make a speaker 4 ways) The speakers also come with a factory 2 year warranty.
Next for subs, you get 2x Pioneer Premier 12″(tsw1207) 400 rms each and a kenwood 9104 amp (900 rms) for for about 450
add 100 to install all and your out at 800 + tax.
The Pioneer Premier will not be cheep but a good local shop will work with you on the price and they are Always looking to help out a reasonable guy with a reasonable budget. Your Key Words were sound quality. Our shop is always looking for customers that are looking for good sound quality because in time, they become great long term customers (not like kids looking for deals on ebay)

Get Alpine Type S for the 6×9′s and 5.25.
I’m a HUGE fan of Type E subs, or L7s.
    You wont regret it.
