Hi,I did the following:
Q&A: What are the American car brands?11 Q&A: What are the American car brands?
The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!

Call me crazy but I don’t know anything about cars and I’ve just been informed to stay away from american car brands? I don’t know how I’m going to do that if I don’t even know what they are?
Well I love Chevy’s and I don’t think I’ll be buying anything besides that no matter what that person said.

GM and Ford are American.

Dodge/Chrystler is owned by Daimler/Chrystler, a german company that also owns Mercedes

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, GMC, Saab Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall.

Ford owns, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mazda(minority stake but still almost every mazda car shares parts with ford), Mercury, and Volvo

As for reliability, domestics and imports have blurred the line. You can no longer judge a brand’s reliability by it’s country of origin.

The biggest benchmark of reliability, the JDPOWER Vehicle dependability study, an industry standard, ranks vehicle brands based on dependability every year. The most recent one, the 2006 Vehicle Dependability Study can be seen here.

As you can see by the graph, Lexus is #1 and has been in the #1 spot for something like 16 of the last 17 years or so, but right behind that are, suprise! Mercury, Buick and Cadilliac! In fact Toyota is #5 behind the Lexus brand(which is owned by Toyota) and 3 domestic brands!

In conclusion, anyone making a blanket statement is to be viewed with caution and I would stay away from the car advice of the person who told you about the “unreliability” of American car brands.

It always helps do do a little bit of research and not take everything at face value.

GM: Chevy, GMC, Pontiac, Buick, Hummer. Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep. Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury to name a few. I wouldn’t consider Honda or Nissan to be “American” even though some models are built in the US. You are contributing to the US economy when you buy “imports” as many Japanese manufacturers have constructed new plants and are building there popular models there. I think Chrysler has the most inovative lineup but all Domestic companies are still suffering compared to the Japanese.

that is crazy don’t stay away from American cars. they are good for the most part.
there is Chrysler/ Plymouth dodge. all one company.
ford .
general motors.
i would if i was you look at the new Chrysler cars they are cool have great warranties and last a long time cost less and are very good . the repair costs on a north American car are a great deal less then others.
the cost of repairs on a German car like a Volkswagen are way too high.
the same goes for the jap cars .
Mazda is good but still i would buy a Chrysler.
in addition to buying a great car you really do help the economy

Anything made by Ford Motor Company (Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar is now owned by Ford, and of course a Ford), any car made by General Motors (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile which is no longer in prodcution, GMC), and any car made by Daimler Chrysler (Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler).

I don’t mean to offend the person who said, “Honda, Nissan, etc…” but don’t listen to that! Those are FOREIGN car makes! Some American car names would include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Lincoln, Mercury, Pontiac, & Saturn. (I may be missing some, but I hope this helps!)

It’s counterproductive to distinguish the country of origin based on the label – most cars regardless of brand are made in the US, and most cars – no matter where made – are junk. At this point, Honda and Toyota are the only ones I would consider.

First of all American cars aren’t necessarily bad. It all depends on preference and what you like. Check out all your options. American carmakers are Ford, GM, Chrysler and other companys that branch off of those companies. I suggest checking out their websites. They will help you alot when seeing what cars are made where.

GM makes Chevy, GMC, hummer, pontiac, saturn, oldsmobile, buick, Isuzu, Daewoo, and cadillac and they are all american cars. GM also owns cars that are not american including Saab, opel, Vauxhaul, and Holden.
Ford, another car company, makes Land Rover, Lincoln, and Mercury. They also own other cars that are not american including Jaguar, Mazda, and Volvo.
Daimler Chrysler makes chrysler, dodge, and jeep. They also make non-american cars including Mitsubishi and Mercedes Benz.

You can’t really ‘stay away’ from American cars anymore.

For example: I work for Ford, but I’ve been doing design work for Honda.

Last time I checked, Honda was from Japan, so Americans are doing their work (Score 1 for American Jobs!)

Most of the ‘foreign’ cars are made in the US (Another point for American Jobs!)

In review: Ford, General Motors, and the Daimler-Chrysler Exchange are American headquartered companies which produce vehicles under their nameplates.

The ‘foreign’ companies, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Kia, etc. hire Americans to design and assemble vehicles.

So what’s the difference between a Foreign and American car? Nothing except for the name.

Who ever told you that is ig-nant. You need to stay away from German cars. Sometimes Korean cars. That means no BMWs, VWs, Mercedes, Porches, Hyundais, Daewoos, Daihatsus.

As far as american cars, GM cars are the most reliable and cheapest to maintain. Japanese cars are always a good bet, they are reliable and cheap. Toyota or Honda are the best choices.

Here’s a bright idea – why not determine your needs, then see what cars meet them? Drive them all, then check to see what Consumer Reports has to say about them. Perhaps the best choice will be an American car!
