use a liquid wax. just spray the wax on and use the whole bar and gently scrub the surface, but be sure to keep it lubed with the SPRAY ON wax. you can get it at any autopart store or walmart in the automotive section. depending on how bad the
clearcoat is, you may need to have an auto-detailer buff it afterwards, buffing it may actually be a better way to remove whatever it is on your car.im guessing oxidation. it shouldnt cost more than maybe less.(depending on severity)

Get the kit Meguiars makes it has the bar of clay and the spray lubricant to use it with and instructions. it will not hurt the paint at all
http://www.meguiars.com/?auto-detailing-clay/Smooth-Surface-Clay-Kit its real simple to use, when done wax the car to shine and protect. Id recommend the synthetic sealant
http://www.meguiars.com/?pro-liquid-car-waxes/Synthetic-Sealant
or the NXT Next generation

The clay does not thin out the paint at all, the clay glides on the paint with the help of the lubricant and removes any surface contamination, such as over spray, tree sap, tar flecks and any other substance which may have gotten stuck to the surface. You will be amazed at how smooth to the touch and reflective the surface will be after claying it. I also recommend a good polymer polish and a polymer wax the polish despite the name is designed to feed the paint and rejuvenate the color, the polymer wax acts to protect the finish, these two products do two different things.

you can either use a spray wax or just car wash soap to lube up the area you are claying
