Q&A: How do I detail my car?11 Q&A: How do I detail my car?
The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!

I own a ’99 Ford Explorer and It needs good detail to get back to show room shine. I need to know the order of how to detail a car after I wash & dry it. Is this order correct? Polish (Whats a good polish?), Clay Bar, Swirl remove, Paint Sealant, wax, Glaze.

Can someone help me out?

After you wash it, you would clay it (make sure you use a lubricant like speed shine with the clay) Then use TR3 resin hand glaze to clean a little more. Next apply a few coats of quality carnuba wax. Polish out with a clean dry soft cotton lint free rag.

OK if your car is really dirty you may need to buff it with a machine for this you will need a cutting compound you have a newish car so Id suggest a cut and polish compound not a heavy cut your car accessory shop can supply you can do it by hand with a cotton material small circular motions rub it in well it doesn’t have to be completely removed but it has to be done even and thoroughly after that wash the car if there is any tar spots or dry bugs you cant get off with the polish wash them with a cloth dipped in kerosene once you have washed the whole car you can degrease it with a spray bottle of kerosene and scrub the motor with an old brush It better to degrease the motor when it is warm (Oh I cover the distributer with a plastic bag taped in place to stop it shorting out ) as the heat helps melt any oil and makes it easier to remove (be careful of the headers/exhaust they will be hot ) when you are through spraying and scrubbing the motor and engine bay rinse it with a good hard jet of water from your hose now wipe the whole car dry with a chamois or towel do the interior by washing down the vinyl with a cloth any marks such as dirt can be washed away with a soft nylon pad like used in the kitchen sink whip it dry and put on a coating of Armoural if you want a non greasy finish water the Armoural down by less than half it will leave you with a fresh finish without gathering all the dust on that oily finish , use a tooth brush coated in Armoural to clean all the cracks and vents and then wrap the tooth brush in a cotton cloth and wipe away any residue after this vacuum the carpets and door trims now do all the interior glass and spray the interior with a house hold deodorizer and close the doors spray the tires with a tire sheen or straight Armoural rub it in to take off the excess. either wash and wax the exterior paint or I prefer to use a high quality silicone polish to seal the paint its more work but the result is longer lasting last of all go around with a polish cloth and just pick up any thing you missed like mud flaps polish in trim moldings or chrome that needs a buffing .

In addition to providing gloss and depth to the finish of your car, applying a good car wax will also protect your car from the elements, including weather, sunlight and even bird droppings. Once you apply and remove car wax, follow it up by applying and removing paint sealant, which is designed to extend your new car paint finish.

You should detail your car about every 3 to 4 weeks, unless you live in an area where there is road construction which will cause dust and debris to settle on your vehicle and may require detailing more often. Just the simple process of washing, drying and waxing your car will bring rewards of a car that looks in tip-top shape for years to come!

Start with the clay bar, I was amazed how well these work even on a black truck.
