Q&A: Is it normal for bike racks to bounce?
The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!
I have an allen bike rack that mounts to the back of my kia sorento and when I go over bumps I hear that it slightly bounces. Is this normal for a bike rack?

Nope. Something is loose are not tight enough somewhere. You are talking about when a bike is on the rack – correct? If no bike on the rack, could be the arms that support the bike are moving a bit. Still doesn’t seem right though.

The rack should be secured to the car and the bike to the rack, it shouldn’t bounce at all. I would invest in a better rack.

No it is not normal. Trunk racks are a constant number of adjustments and re-adjustments. on the straps. Once you pull down on one, go to the opposite side and readjust it too. I will go back and forth several times before I am satisfied that ‘all is good’. Then I pull and tug on the rack from the sides and top to make sure that there is no slipping. I would bet that you have a strap that has a just a bit of slack in it. Just a small amount of slack will allow the fully weighted rack to make quite a ‘thud’.
Tighten them up!
