Q&A: How can I take better care of my car?
I hate dealing with car repairs and such. I just want to put gas in my car. I guess I am a typical woman. I recently got an older car because of financial reasons. I was wondering how can I take better care of my car on a limited budget? What kind of routine maintenance (ex. oil changes) should I do and how often? My car is a 1996 Dodge Neon with 106,000 miles on it. I need it to last at least two years until I car afford a car payment for a newer car.
Also any good web sites or books on basic car care?

I’d suggest selling the Neon, and getting a better car.

Then, since you can’t really take care of it yourself, take it in for regular maintenance.

Lots of oil changes. Every 3000 miles at least. Don’t drive it hard. Keep good tires on it. Annual radiator flush. It’ll last long enough.

well, you can change your oil every three to four months, reguardless how much it gets driven, once a tear, have some one you trust, to tune the engine up, every two years, have the fluid in your transmittion changed.

The body rust, I have given up on, but at least my engine will last me quite a while

About the simplest thing you can do is “inspect” everything under that hood every week at least…just because you are female isn’t a good reason you shouldn’t be familiar with what is under there.

Always check levels on:

1. oil…AND oil quality, that is a visual check. Bright and semi-clear, not dark and dirty looking…

2, Power steering fluid, up to the line on the cap dip stick…

3. Brake fluid in the master cylinder. Remove the cap and it should be full…Quality should be bright and semi clear also…NEVER dirty.

4. Automatic transmission fluid…Start car in park, pull it’s dip stick, wipe off with a rag, put it all the way back in, pull out and it should always be in the “checkered” area engraved on it…quality should be bright red (usually), and not brownish or dirty looking at all…

5. Radiator Over flow tank, the plastic one off to the side on a fender well…always between the cold and hot lines on the side…check cold engine, not hot usually.

As for the transmission, unless you “know” without question that the fluid and filter have been changed in the last couple years, have that changed now! Believe it or not, too many cars never get the transmission filter changed until it is too late…

Visually check your tires every few days, and check the pressure once a week religiously. Low tire pressure causes more problems than you want to deal with…and always check how all four of your tires are “wearing”. They should always wear evenly all the way across the tread. That is a visual thing, and trust me here, it will be obvious if you look closely, when there is something wrong.

…and is would be a good idea to pay for a suspension check and alignment now! That way you know it will be safe to drive for a while yet.

p.s. I have a 96 Pontiac Grand Prix with about 100,000, runs like brand new, just because I check under the hood regularly…you can too
