We had several concrete design constraints that we started with before we began our design ideas: a cup holder that is sized for a Venti sized Starbucks cup that is also recyclable, and a cell phone holder that attaches to the cup holder. When we thought about the size of the cup that our device would be supporting, we wanted to figure out where we could attach it to the bike so that we could achieve maximum support. We ended up planning on the cup holder attaching to the bike handles in the center where they attach to the main frame of the bike. Next we tried to think of the materials that we could use to make the cup holder. We had a few ideas come up that included plastic as well as some sort of metal wiring. Aesthetically, we wanted to use a material that would somewhat blend in with the existing bike’s scheme. To do this we decided to use aluminum wire because it met our aesthetic criteria, it was recyclable, and it was easily malleable. We wrapped the wire around an object with our desired shape and made modifications so that it would fit to the bike. We proceeded to make the cell phone holder out of the same aluminum wiring.
