Can You Drive A Car Without Its Accessory Belt?

My car broke it’s accessory belt. I know it can make the battery die but is it safe for the car to be driven without one?

A:

If you’re at work and only live a couple of miles away. Yes, you can get home. The belt runs the power steering, engine fan (if it’s an older car) and all the electrical systems in the car, including brake lights and turning signals. If you live close, then no problem, if not have someone fix it before you drive.

A:

you could drive it maybe a mile safely before it would overheat and possibly warp the head of your engine as the water pump won’t be working and you won’t have power steering, I wouldn’t recommend driving it any farther.

A:

I would say it’s safe to drive on to your nearest, reliable repair shop and ask them to replace the belt. Surely, you don’t want to continue on driving around until your battery DOES go down so low that your engine, et al, stops working.

A:

It depends on the car and what the belt runs. You wont make it very far if belt drives the water pump or alternator . What year make and model is your car?

A:

no its not safe to drive with out the accessory belt.
