Hi,I did the following:
Q&A: Can i leave my car parked for a year?
The pictures have nothing to do with the content!!
I’m deploying to Afghanistan in about 2 weeks. I was wondering if i can park my car for a year in storage because i have nobody to drive it around or anything. Also is outdoor storage ok or should i go ahead and get the indoor storage.
What should i do to prepare the car for this long storage.

You’ll probably need to bring someone else with you to start her up again because the battery will be dead after that amount of time. Also make sure there’s some fuel in her if it’s going to get cold.
Also make sure there are no rust spots if you’re leaving the car outside otherwise they will get larger, probably a good idea to invest in a car cover =)

you need to put some dry gas additive in your tank to keep your gas from going bad

if outdoor is necessary get a car cover but jack it up and put blocks under the frame it will keep the tires from dryrotting and put some stabil in the gas tank you can get it at most auto parts stores its a fuel stabilizer that will keep your fuel from gelling and just to be on the safe side it wouldnt hurt to go ahead and have the oil changed
P.S. stay safe over there and thank you for your service

It is best to store inside on concrete. It saves the bottom of car and brake parts from rusting from ground moisture. Esp. bad if parking where horses and other animals have been. Remains of their urine and dropping will totally destroy the underside of a vehicle. Fill the tank and treat the gas with a good dose of “Sea Foam” to keep the ethenal from changing the gas to jelly while sitting. It can happen in a couple months much less a year. There are other gas treatments but in 45 yrs of car work nothing works as good as “Sea Foam” Can find in a lot of WalMarts or NAPA’s. Check anti freeze. Best if you can leave tires off floor. Cover if there might be a bird dropping problem, good coat of wax wouldn’t hurt. Good luck both with the car and your deployment. Remove battery as it will freeze and split if left in cold climate and make a mess.

Thank you for protecting America. I pray you will be ok the whole time you are there. I have two brothers who were in Viet Nam two times and how hard going to war is. Again Thanks.
I sure would pay for a storage unit and explain to the manager about the year in Afghanistan. He might even give you a break on price because you are a soldier. The indoor storage is the best choice so the car doesn’t get stolen or stripped. Take my word for that.

Also, disconnect the battery if you don’t have someone to come by and start it for you.
In case of damage occurring to it, leave your title and a power of attorney with a relative.
Thank you for your service!

If you do decide to put it in storage I recommend an indoor storage. I use http://www.storagedeluxe.com/ to store my boat over the winter and I know you can easily store a car in there as well. When you do store it you should have an empty gas tank and unplug the battery. You should go online to http://www.storagedeluxe.com/ and see all the services they have to offer. I hope this was helpful.

Excellent article and thank you for sharing! I have a secondary car (Mustang Cobra) that I don’t drive often, and this article was very helpful.
